Pokemon HeartGold SoulSilver Kanto Walkthrough Part 43 – Mt. Silver

HMs Needed: Rock Climb, Surf, Waterfall, Strength
Item Recommendation: Escape Rope x5, As Many Healing Items as you can afford.

To explore all of Mt. Silver, you will need all of those moves and likely you will want to leave a few times just to refresh your team. To get to the first item ball, head to the left, start surfing then use Waterfall to climb the nearby waterfall. Head straight up to reach the first small cave. Inside is an item ball with an Expert Belt inside it.

Catching Moltres:
Having grabbed that nearby item puts you very close to where you can encounter and capture Moltres! Head out of the room where you found the item ball. Surf to the left and use Rock Climb on the portion of wall that you can. Head upwards, using Surf, Rock Climb and Waterfall as appropriate to reach a second small cave inside the mountain. Here, you will find Moltres. Remember: SAVE!!!! This saves you having to beat the Elite Four again to cause Moltres to respawn.

Moltres lvl. 50
Start the battle with a moderately powerful attack. Moltres is a decently powerful Pokemon that can take a beating. It also can dish out damage, so have a Pokemon that can resist the attacks that it can throw out. A Rock or Water Pokemon will be able to handle most of the attacks without flinching or something like Snorlax that just has absurd amounts of HP.

Catching it requires a little thought. Dark Balls will be more effective since you are inside a cave. You can also use Quick Balls if you manage to drop its HP low enough in a mere turn or two. Nest Balls are only an option if you have a lvl. 100 Pokemon. If you are desperate or don't have another option, there is always your Master Ball, but that is best saved for something else, much more powerful than this ...

Ability: Pressure
Air Slash
Flamethrower
Safeguard
Ancient Power

Making your way to Red
Head back to the entrance of Mt. Silver. Use Rock Climb on the section of wall right in front of the entrance that you can. Head up a little then go to the right to reach the next area. The item ball just below where you emerge from has an Escape Rope inside it. To get the rest of the items in this area, you can head all the way to the left, reaching the third plateau in the area. Head south to find the next item ball with TM 76, Stealth Rock, inside it. Head up from there, getting down to the second plateau. Head down a little and step back into the Mountain.

Work your way around the rocks to find an item ball with a Full Restore. You will then want to head down and to the left, taking the stairs that you see to reach the next part of Mt. Silver on the second plateau. From there, follow the path to the left then go up the large stair case. From there, take the nearby stairs up. This area loops around, the first one has a Max Elixir, the next one up has a Max Revive, followed by a Calcium. Head out the northern exit.

Here, you will be moving between the mountainside and the mountain itself. Head over to the right, then follow the path downwards. Turn into the first opening you see (it also has an item ball with a Protein inside it). From there, head down and take the next exit onto the mountainside. Again, down then to the left (optional to rock climb the bit nearby to get to an item ball with a Pure Incense). Head to the left and out onto the mountainside once more. You will see a series of patches you can Rock Climb. To reach Red, take the center Rock Climbing Paths. The ones on the left lead to an item ball, with a Dawn Stone inside, while the ones on the right lead to “dead ends”. Follow this path to get to Red.

If your team is not around lvl. 70 to 75, this could prove to be a nearly unbeatable battle. You will want to hit the Elite Four for levels or just find places to grind out some experience. Be sure you are Well Stocked on healing items like Revive, Full Heal, Full Restore etc. so you can take a beating in some cases just to soak up PP. While Mt. Silver offers some great fights, Red is the final boss of the game!

Fighting Red
Red has powerful Pokemon, not a single one is below lvl. 80! At this level of combat, you want to have a fresh Pokemon entering the field. Still, it is important switch your Pokemon out when they are up against something that can beat them. The battlefield won't be in your favor either, with it Hailing only Ice Pokemon will go undamaged each turn. It also means half of his team has a move with Perfect Accuracy for the entirety of the fight. While it is Hailing, Blizzard will always hit. The only saving grace of this insanely powerful and accurate move is that it CAPS at 8 PP. Still, careful attacking is the name of the game. Always aim to hit a Weakness here. Red's Pokemon truly have a diverse Moveset and while they may not optimally use it, it is still something to deal with.

Pikachu and Snorlax pose an interesting threat that should be addressed separately. For the Pikachu, it's Red's strongest Pokemon, but it is very fast and rather weak too. A Ground move will floor it but any strong PHYSICAL attack will also do the same. With the Snorlax, it's a lot like taking down a Wall that will bite back at you. With ridiculous HP and a strong attack, it can endure hits most Pokemon can't. It is Normal Type so any fighting moves should be used here and repeatedly. Be thankful this Pokemon doesn't have Rest! If possible, get a status on this Pokemon, keep it there (as Red has those Full Restores) and pound on it.

Full Restores: 4

Pikachu lvl. 88 – Volt Tackle, Iron Tail, Quick Attack, Thunderbolt
Blastoise lvl. 84 – Focus Blast, Hydro Cannon, Blizzard, Flash Cannon
Charizard lvl. 84 – Flare Blitz, Air Slash, Dragon Pulse, Blast Burn
Venusaur lvl. 84 – Sludge Bomb, Giga Drain, Sleep Powder, Frenzy Plant
Snorlax lvl. 82 – Shadow Ball, Blizzard, Giga Impact, Crunch
Lapras lvl. 80 – Blizzard, Brine, Psychic, Body Slam

For all your efforts, you have manged to beat Red! It's a very tough fight and one you probably had to do once or twice to get through. Red really does not have much to say though other than being surprised and then vanishing. With that, credits roll, the game saves, and you find yourself back in New Bark Town, awaiting the next great part of the adventure!
