No it's not Mercenary. But I did play Mercenary so maybe some of the plot elements from Mercenary got into what I remembered about the other game.

But as I said the thing I am really sure about is that alley with thugs where you would get mugged and had to deposit your money in the bank before crossing the alley so that you dont lose all your money.

    Hi

I am trying to remember also a name of a game I played a lot. It had a Japanese setting and Japanese music (but game was in English) and you could choose to play as one of many characters such as a servant, a warrior, or a lord, and you would go around fighting people and forming alliances and I don't remember exactly what the final goal of the game was, only that the game was fun anybody know the name of the game I am talking about?

I'm trying to remember a game in which you controlled a nuclear power plant and had to make sure there's no melt down... a simulator of sorts

There was an interesting game I used to play... I think it was one of the first games I played on the C64? You played as a fish (I think you could choose which kind of fish to play as but not sure) and you'd run into other fish and stuff and you'd have to decide whether to eat the other fish or to run away..you'd also have to be careful not to get fished by a fisherman... does this sound familiar to anyone?

I think the background was darker... like black? The ones in the screenshot are mostly blue and white background.

other thing I can remember- there would be like scrolling text with status messages. And you could type commands to bring up all sorts of schematics and diagrams on the monitor. Dont remember much more

The game with the fish is Odell Lake

It was a pretty cool game. I believe it was a pack-in with some C64s

I think the nuclear plant simulator one you are looking for is a game called "Chernobyl"

You can download the rom here

I downloaded it myself and tried it and it does sound like the game you are talking about

    Yes thats it! Great!

This game brings up some cool memories (Like having to type "Scram" to bring the plant to an emergency shutdown to prevent meltdown )
