Default What trading card games would you recommend for a 6 year old?

I have a 6 year old son and I'd like to have him try some trading card games. What games would you recommend for that age?

Obviously, the content would have to be suitable (so no mature content) and the game should be fun and simple enough. If it is also a little education then that is a plus, but more important is for it to be fun.

Well...going w/what's popular lately, I'd say Huntik would be a good one since the instructions on the cards are pretty easy to follow on each card.

Pokemon would also make a good choice for him since the rules for that game are pretty easy to learn as well.

One other I can think of is Dinosaur King since it follows the Rock/Paper/Scissors rule for a good portion of the cards which is pretty easy to teach him also. Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper and Paper beats Rock...'nuff said.

Hope that helps. L8r for now.

    Default Pokemon Trading Card Game

I know the Pokemon Trading Card Game is very popular with kids.

I haven't played the Pokemon TCG, but if its that popular then there must be something to it...

Maybe the Harry Potter Trading Card game by Wizards of the Coast?

That one's too similar to M:TG and can even get even more confusing than that game considering the rules are harder to learn than M:TG's and that says a lot considering all the stuff you gotta know in order to play that game properly.

I believe mrgamesmaster is right... I think it even says on their website that the Harry Potter game is intended for ages 9+

Yu-Gi-Oh! is another very popular one among kids.

My only real complaint w/Yu-gi-oh! for that age range would be the fact that you have to know how to count to the thousands which most peeps that age won't know how to do properly. Also, with cards like Solemn Judgement where you have to pay a certain amount in order to use it, it's possible that they won't be able to comprehend the proper amount and as such can lead to confusion in games.

With Pokemon, the most you usually have to worry about is the hundreds range which isn't that hard to comprehend since it's much easier math. As for Huntik, all the cards I've seen so far have single digit attack and defense which makes it much easier for kids to understand who beats whom.

While the Harry Potter subject is still around, that game isn't made anymore unlike the other ones that have been mentioned in here. YGO has a hiccup w/Organized Play in North America, but hasn't fully grinded to a halt. I honestly wouldn't recommend that game to anyone.

If the kid was of a more mature age, I'd recommend him to Fight Klub since you pay energy costs like in Pokemon, the life totals are single digit and the games go fairly quickly. On top of that, you get to play as one of your fav characters from the movies. Maybe later on. :P

I think Dinosaur King which was also mentioned above is a good suggestion.

    Thanks for all your suggestions!

I think I'll start him out with Dinosaur King, see how he likes that one.

Glad to see you liked my suggestion. I've been checking it out a bit more as of late and it should be easy for him to learn. It's the standard 20 life like M:TG, but not nearly as complicated to learn due to having much simpler mechanics. You can check out Upper Deck's page on the game to see what I mean.

Though remember collectible card games can be very addicting, so careful not to get him too carried away with them (like me i'd probably been rich if I hadnt spent all my money on trading cards and miniatures )
