Why would a sega genesis fail to power on?

Incorrect amperage, short in the power switch, short in dc jack, failed AC Adapter or dead Circuit Board.

My best suggestion when dealing with the Model 1 & 2 Genesis (I don't have a model 3) is to get the original power adapter or find an AC Adapter that Matches the correct amperage. I've learned from experience that the Genesis console are very picky about their power.

You can view the power requirements on the bottom of the console.

Model 1: (Big Says High Definition on it) DC 9Volts 12Amps
    Model 2: (Smaller( 10Volts 0.85Amps

The model twos are notorious for the Solder Jouint wearing out on the DC Jack. Thus causing distorted picture, sound or not powering on.
