I named my Pidgey "Pig"
Short for Pigwidgeon, me being a crazy Harry Potter fan. This can work for any bird pokemon, really. ^^
So can Hermes, but I gave that to Wartortle, because of the ears.

If it's a male, I would name it Pengu after the island in Surf's Up.lol.
For a female, I would name it Bubbles, just because it seems a fitting name for almost any water type.

I also need help naming a female Rapidash. Any ideas?

Oh and im sorry im going on about nicknames here and i forgot about Rapidash.
Call it Celestial if its a girl. Fire makes me think of the sun and the sun is a star. stars are celestial bodies in space. If its a boy call it Combustion. also celestial refers to princess celestia of my little pony and she is a sun pony... idk if anyone here watches that.

and for ppl who asked about empoleon...hmmmm
Boy names titan-(. Hes The ocean god that carries the pitchfork. thats what empoleon has on its head.) Mumble(if your a girl with an empoleon... mumble may b good. i think of happy feet when i see penguins :3)
Girl names- this one is actually hard... Call her Neptune. Hes a roman god of the sea but i think neptune can go for a girl as well.

Being a game nerd/geek/whatever, I typically name my Pokemon after a character in a Final Fantasy game with a similar trait in some way. For example, Aerith (FLOWER GIRL from Final Fantasy VII) is my Venusaur, while my Lapras is named Balthier (Sky Pirate from Final Fantasy XII - one of the most EPIC and BADASS characters in the whole game, if not the most, and his special attacks involve WATER and ICE). I'm not really CLEVER with many names, either. I would LIKE to be, but I'm not quite ready yet.

List of names I can remember off the top of my head and the reasons for the name:
Female Venusaur = Aerith (Final Fantasy VII - FLOWER GIRL)
Male Lapras = Balthier (EPIC, BADASS, WATER/ICE user from Final Fantasy XII)
Female Pidgeot = Freya (Final Fantasy IX - FEMALE DRAGOON, so uses AERIAL attacks)
Male Raichu = Vivi (Final Fantasy IX - MALE BLACK MAGE, uses lots of ELECTRIC-elemental attacks)
Female Haunter = Lulu (Final Fantasy X - FEMALE BLACK MAGE, uses elements of SHADOW, and has POISON-inducing spells)
Male Hitmonlee = Sabin (Final Fantasy VI - MALE MONK, basically just a physical brute)
Paras = Slave 1 (OBVIOUS reason is obvious)
Seaking = F--K YEAH! (It's a meme, look it up)
Dewgong = NARWHALZ!! (Just look up the song....)
Male Skarmory = Highwind (Like EVERY Dragoon character in a Final Fantasy game's last name; also the METAL AIRSHIP in VII)

That's all of 'em off the top of my head alone. I'll add more later in an edit when I actually LOOK at them.

Charmander: Female- Charm (charm is in its name) Male- Ignitus (latin for fire or something)
Squirtle: Female: Shellie Male- Shelldon, if more pokemony, spout or squirt might be good.
Bulbasaur: Saur, Bulba, Sprout (as in plant spout) Flora, if girl.
Cyndaquil:Cynder, Flam, Blaze, Quil (eh? think about it)
Totodile: Munchy, Crunchy, Munch, Crunch, Fang, (my fav)
Chikorita: Venus (cuz venus fly trap, is strong and is a plant, and fits both genders) Flora, Magnolia, other kinds of flowers.
Torchic: KFC, Blazer, Flare, Solare (i made this one. it sounds like solar, as in from the sun, but with the e, sounds fancy.)
Mudkip: Muddy, Kip, Kippy, Skipper, MARSHall.
Treecko: Treeckie, Tree, Gecko, Wood, Rose (if girl) Climber (since it has little psikes on its feet, so it can climb)
Chimchar: Simian, Monkey, Blaze, Firey, Mach.
Piplup: Pengu, Penguin, Flipper, Slippery, Frost, Sheer (as in sheer cold) freeze, Glacier.
Turtwig: Clay, Twig, Wood, Shellie or Shelldon.
Tepig: Bacon, Ham, Porky, Piggy, Blaze, Flare, Fire.
Oshawott: Samu, Samurai, Rai, Kai.
Snivy: Leaf, Blade, Twister, Sprout, Quicksilver.

Scizor: Scissors, Soul, Cutter, Red.
