How do I catch pokemon in the Pastoria Great Marsh

I'm in Pastoria great marsh but I have no attacks except food or mud and only one type of ball called safari ball and the pokemon keep running away

throw some bait or mud and hope it doesnt run away, then throw a ball and hope it catches it

what exactly does bait and mud do? how do i decide whether to throw bait or mud to catch the pokemon?

im not sure, but i think throwing bait makes it less aware than if you threw mud, either that or if you throw bait, if you catch it, it has higher happiness

throwing bait makes the pokemon easier to catch but also increases the chance theyll flee

throwing mud at them makes them harded to catch but also makes it harder for them to escape

just play around with that see how the pokemon respond to the mud and food and practice catching them

If you are lucky then sometimes you will catch them just by throwing the safari ball without any food or mud
