Water or Grass are generally favored for their advantages early in the game. Fire is usually the hardest of the starters.
Finally, a new generation of Pokemon for us to enjoy. There is much to look forward to in 2011!

outside of competitive play grass starter is garbage.

grass starter= good at everything but damage, durable. (status, screener, staller)

fire starter= high damaging specials yet shallow movepool.(also highest speed between the 3 starters)

water starter= good mix of attack+defense, has access to swords dance and dragon dance(slowest speed between the 3 starters)

overall i'd say water starter is best to navigate through the game especially since you can teach him hm07 and it wouldnt be a wasted slot.

oooh. I love starting G&S with mudkip. Swampert is cheap with his ground type so electric attacks don't effect him. I follow up with a fire/bird (like hoothoot) pokemon to fight the rival's meganium.

I think you mean you like starting R&S with mudkip. Totodile is the starting water pokemon in G&S.
