Am curious, why do people still play the NES when the systems today are so much superior in terms of graphics,memory,speed, effects and such

Many grew on the NES, so they have good memories and like to play it.
Also, some classic NES games are still better than modern ones even after all those days
The games are cheap
And, the NES is Pimpin'!
Classic NES games were fun and simple;
Some modern games are complicated and have a horrible story
I grew up with it, and it has has my largest library of unbeaten games. A sense of fulfillment comes a little more readily from beating some of those games. And they are still quite fun.
Finally, a new generation of Pokemon for us to enjoy. There is much to look forward to in 2011!
While today's games are graphic intensive, the Nintendo NES games got by on gameplay and fun instead of flash. A lot of today's games are all sizzle and no steak. NES was all steak baby.

Awsome gameplay, nostalgia, and first mainstream home system.
Nostalgia mostly. But some of the games are really fun. I think I've finished SMB3 maybe 100 times now, and final fantasy like a dozen. By the way it took me 5-6 clears on FF over the years before I realized you could bump up the battle speed. Boy THAT was lulzy.

Modern day video games require a lot of time to complete, and require less precision and practice to get to the end. Retro games on the other hand, are more gratifying to complete and can be completed in a weekend, if not an evening. I just don't have the time anymore to divot 12+ hours to a game.
While there are some gems on the NES, let's not pretend there weren't POS games like there are today. Need evidence? Look at anything LJN ever released.
It's fun and simple
Nostalgia mostly. But really a lot of NES games were so well thought out, they still hold up today.
