how do you decide on what cards to put in a magic deck

that depends on what deck you want to build. first you need an idear. that could be anything. here are some examples:

i love black/ green
i want realy big creatures
elves have always been my favourit
the card xy is realy cool ... what deck can i build arround that
card xy and wz work realy good together
i think landfall is realy cool

or for competative magic

what deck is withn my budget
wahat si the best deck at the moment
what deck would beat the best decks

...

once you have even the slightest idea you can start looking for cards that fit the idea and in the end just cut down to 60 leaving the best / most important stuff in and you have a deck
