There are three basic things you want to look out for -

    1. Bombs. These are cards that, if your opponent can't answer, will quickly win you the game all on their own. An example is Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet - a large creature that kills your opponent's creatures while making your own army grow is something that must be answered if you want any chance of winning.

    2. Removal. Creature removal is the most relevant one, but I always make sure to include at least once piece of artifact/enchantment removal as well. No matter what a creature does or how big it is, if you can't stop it, you will lose.

    3. Evasion. A lot of games end up stalled on the ground - being able to punch through for hard-to-block damage can decide the game.

There's a lot more to it than that, but keep those things in mind as a start.
