Typically this is because the PC does not have enough RAM or GDR (Vid Card Ram) or simply your CPU cannot handle the load. Post your PC Specs for more info on that.
Also which game is causing this?

    Try this as a fix

Click "Start" and Open the "Games Menu"

Left-Click a Game Icon to Highlight it, then Right-Click and select "Customize" from the menu.

You should now have a menu label "Customize Play Menu Items for this game"
make sure "Play" is highlighted and Click "Edit"

You should now be in a menu "Play Properties" select the "Compatibility tab" In this menu put a check in the boxes for "Disable Visual Themes" and "Disable Desktop Composition"

After these are Checked Click "Apply" then "Ok" and try it again.

What this does is to force Vista to disable "Aeroglass" and other Visual Effects that use up memory and processor time. So that when you minimize or Alt+Tab out of a game, there will be much less of a Spike in Resources to Render you Desktop.
