I've heard of people that make their living from MMORPGs. Can you really earn money just by playing MMORPGs, or is this just a legend?
I believe you can, but like with any other money making opportunities, you have to be very good at what you do and work hard.
I think there are several ways in which one would make money from MMORPGs:
1) Sell Gold or other virtual currency. There is a big market for virtual currency. However, its hard to compete against chinese farmers and such. Also many games have rules against it (Such as World of Warcraft) so you can get your account banned.
2) Selling rare items: If you are good at getting rare items in some games you can sell them
3) Writing guides or tutorials- if you can write a very good guide on the topic- for example a gold guide or a leveling guide - and charge a small fee for it people might buy. But there's lots of competition here too.
So as you can see its very competitive and you have to be real good at what you do to make money
I heard of some people who make a living off Second Life, is that true?
Yeah, according to this article you can:

"You see land for sale, virtual real estate," said Eric Rice is a Second Life fan who's part of this $220 million a-year economy. "You're renting space to be able to store your things. So that translates to a world where you can walk around and interact with people as real estate. And some people do extremely well with it."
Some people make a living in Second Life the old-fashioned way, by making stuff and then selling it. Rice has built entire building complexes like a music center. Online, he looks pretty close to how he looks in real life.

What about WoW, anyone make a living by playing World of Warcraft?
It's quite possible to make money online by playing WoW and selling gold/characters, but as a living I highly doubt it. I believe it's possible in Asian countries where the living standard is pretty low, but as for places like the US and Canada... nah
