Default Commune with Nature You may reveal a creature card from among them rulings magic faq

need help settling an arguement with a friend. He was playing a green deck and I was playing a red deck. Anyway he casts a commune by nature it says

Look at the top five cards of your library. You may reveal a creature card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

and he put a card in his hand without showing me. I said he has to show me but he didnt want to and he said that because it says "you MAY reveal" then he doesnt have to reveal me the card if he doesnt want to. But then how do I know he really put a creature card in his hand and not for example an instand card or a land card?

He's wrong. The "you may" refers to the entire action of revealing and putting the card into his hand. The two actions are tied together. If he puts a card into his hand, he must reveal it to you. Likewise, if he doesn't reveal a card, he can't put one into his hand.
