Default Trickster mage tap target land magic official rulings faq

if i have a trickster mage in play

Other player has 6 lands and he plays a spell that costs 5 mana

I now use the trickster mage ability to tap one of his 5 lands he was using to pay for that spell

Can he then tap the remaining land instead? Or does he manaburn?

    Neither.

You can't interrupt someone paying a cost. And besides, once he's tapped a land for mana, he gets that mana immediately - tapping the land again won't somehow take the mana out of his mana pool.

(Mana abilities can't be countered.) Remember that. You will appreciate it when you're on the other side of the table.
It's a fundamental concept of MAGIC and one of its aspects that makes it playable as well as fun.

However, if you want to be ruthless, tap your opponent's land during his upkeep step, before his draw step, so he can't tap it for mana during the rest of his or your turns.
