i thought that if an enchantment or aura leaves the battlefield its effect ends, or have i been playing it wrong

No, you've been playing it right. Infinite Reflection's ability only functions while on the battlefield - but that ability is that it changes how creatures enter the battlefield. If Infinite Reflections leaves, that ability goes away, and creatures enter the battlefield normally again - but those that have already entered won't change, because the ability has already applied to them.
