Default magic sacrifice deal no damage

Is it true that if you sacrifice a creature during combat it deals no damage?

Because it used to be that it did deal damage but someone told me its not like that anymore

Default Re: magic sacrifice deal no damage

befor magic 2010 combat damage used a stack. creature a attacks, creature b blocks. creature a and b put thier damage on the stack. now both players can react (play instants, activated abilitys, like sacrificing a creature etc.). then the damage is resolved.

now combat damage does not use a stack any more. so its creatures deal combat damage, it resolves with no opportunity for players to react. so if you want to sacrifice a creature for some effect you either have to do it befor damage, or after if the creature is still alive. you cant deal damage and then sacrifice befor the damage is resolved any more.
