In most cases, it's more worth putting the alternate cost to good use instead of using it to seriously counter a spell.

Its great especially if it is your turn and someone throws down a terror or something, and you havent played a land yet.

Would that work? It's an alternative cost, and in order to pay you have to have it, right?

Yes you do have to have it. But if you just played a big creature with all of your mana, you can daze and put the land in untapped if you didnt put a land in already.
