what does the latin word "oconomus" mean?
I'm sorry that you are receiving so many different translations. Rest assured that a Cottager was what was once called a share-cropper in the US, later a tenant farmer. The German word for Cottager is Haeusler or Häusler.
Your Latin Oconomus is exactly the same. The German word is ökonomisch. In earlier times it referred to a simple farmer, farming on land that did not belong to him. As time progressed it came to refer to a farm-type who had become a steward or manager or economist, but that's not what it meant historically. Eventually, instead of working the land, on land that was not his, he became responsible for the farming estate as a manager, which included the planning of an economist. He performed the latter in planning circles, as well, finally becoming a degreed Master's or Ph.D. type in farm economics, teaching at a university or working for the government. But from the 14th until the late 19th century, he was simply a farmer.
