You can't attack creatures at all.

In the combat phase, the active player simply "attacks". The only choice he has is, if the defender has a planeswalker out, he can choose to attack the player or the planeswalker.

Then, the defender chooses which creatures he is going to block with, and which creatures they are going to block. Flying creatures can (usually) block either flying or non-flying creatures. Non-flying creatures can only block non-flying creatures.
