Okay few examples for you:

You attack with a 7/1 Trample creature opponent blocks with a 2/2 creature the trample creature will die but 5 dmg will still trample over to the opposing player.

Another

You attack with a 7/1 Trample creature opponent blocks with a 2/2 first strike creature the trample creature will die before the damage has a chance to trample over and the opponent will take no damage.
