It means exactly what it says - the permanent is unable to be destroyed. It can be dealt damage, but that damage won't destroy it. And it can be the target of a spell like Doom Blade, it just won't do anything.
Note that only lethal damage and effects that use the word "destroy" count as destroying something. Exiling, countering, bouncing, sacrificing, discarding, or giving the creature -X/-X until it has 0 toughness will all still affect the creature.
