    Default Shroud vs Cumalitve Upkeep

    Hey All,

    My question is:

Will shroud protect my creature from its own triggered ability, like cumaltive upkeep?

    Example:

    Using Robe of Mirrors -

Enchant creature (Target a creature as you play this. This card comes into play attached to that creature.) Enchanted creature has shroud. (It can't be the target of spells or abilities.)

    to enchant Pyrexian Soulgorger -

Cumulative upkeep - Sacrifice a creature. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

    Thanks,

    The new guy

    no.

Shroud prevents a permanent from being targetted. So for example if an opponent played a spell that said "destroy target creature", he couldnt choose your creature with shroud.

Pyrexian Soulgorger's cumulative upkeep does not target anything. Having shroud on the Pyrexian Soulgorger will not prevent its effect.

Oh, right, "targeted". Thanks for the quick response!

So my next question is...is there a way to counter cumalitve upkeep?

Power Conduit doesn't counter the ability entirely - you'll still need to pay the cost once each upkeep - but it gets rid of the "cumulative" part.

that would only work once right?

Is there a card like Pithing Needle, except for triggered abilities? A card like stifle but not an instant?

(woops, we were posting at the same time. thanks)

You could always stick Stifle on an Isochron Scepter as well, though that'll cost you 2 mana each turn.

There is also, while not a great option, of soul foundry and Vampire Hexmage

For a less-than-traditional and casual only solution: Giant Fan this does have the added bonus of they become +1/+1 counters.
Finally, a new generation of Pokemon for us to enjoy. There is much to look forward to in 2011!
