Default Damage Dealt to Player or Creature

This may be a dumb question, but when something says for example:

"deals 1 damage to target player or creature"

If a player is targeted, does this damage bypass the creatures and deal 1 damage to the player, unblockable, or can the player simply block this 1 damage with one of the creatures that weren't targeted to start with? Thanks!

Default Re: Damage Dealt to Player or Creature

damage dealt through spell or ability cannot be blocked by a creature. Creatures only block combat damage

For example this spell cannot be blocked by creature:
    Lightning Bolt

and the tap ability of Prodigal Pyromancer

so like with the Prodigal Pyromancer if you use the ability the damage cannot be blocked by creature, but if you instead just attack with the Prodigal Pyromancer then it can be blocked.
