First of all, how is your Dark Confidant making your opponent draw?

If you hit a split card off of Dark Confidant, then you lose life equal to the combined converted mana cost of both halves. In the case of Bound//Determined, you'll lose 7 life.

    ...no. No, it doesn't.

At the beginning of your upkeep, reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost.

Because having more cards is more valuable than having a high life total.

Dark Confidant is around $60. Sell or trade it if you don't want it.

Are you aware of how much Confidant is worth? Getting more cards is worth way more than life, and gaining life is possible, especially in black. Hell, if you don't want it, mail it to me and I'll pay the shipping.

Here's a bit of advice for you about something a lot of less experienced players don't really get - life isn't that important. It's not something to be hoarded and protected, it's just another resource to use. Here's a quick test:

    1. Is Yawgmoth's Bargain a bad card?
    2. You're on 20 life and your opponent attacks you with a 2/2. Do you block?
    3. Which card is better - Stomping Ground or Rootbound Crag?

    No to all.
    1. Yawgmoth's Bargain is so powerful that it's banned in tournament play.
    2. Why would you block? You're on 20.
    3. Stomping Ground is the far better card.

You really do overvalue life. If you don't like to give up life for good cards, then don't play black.

It makes no difference if you win on 1 life or 100 life. The point is that life is a resource to be used, not something to be guarded at all costs.

    This.

It's only the last point that matters and, if you can manage to work around it with something like Platinum Angel, even that's debateable.
