how does attack phase work when multiple players?

Generally, for each attacking creature, you can choose a different player (or planeswalker) to attack. Some groups may have different rules though, such as "attack left" (attack only the player to your immediate left/planeswalkers that player controls), or "range of influence X" (attack only X players to your left or right).
