how do you attack a creature directly in magic?

You can't. You declare you attackers going after a planeswalker or a player. It is up to the defending player to choose if they want to block with their creatures or not.

You can however, target creatures with many spells or abilities as a mean of killing them specifically either thru damage, destroy etc.
