Generally, a creature with more power. A classic example is Alpha Myr (a 2/1 for 2) versus Omega Myr (a 1/2 for 2).
Which would you prefer against a 1/1? Omega.
Which would you prefer against a 2/2? Alpha.
    Which is more threatening, a 1/1 or a 2/2?

a 6/1 can do lotsa more dmg but it can get killed more easily like with lightining bolt but a creature with 1/6 does less damage but it has to be blocked by many creatures to be killed and is not eesy to kill

in general power / toughness can be compaired to life gain / life loss. its better to let your opponent lose live tahn to gain live yourself. why ? becvause norlmaly gaining live will not win games, loosing live on your opponents side will. this does not always hold true but in most cases it does.

more power will kill your opponent fast so its generaly precived as the more valueble stat.

it does however depend on the format, typ of deck your playing and what role the creature plays. here is an exaple i hope is understandable:

[mtg]Dark Confidant(/mtg] is a very powerful creature. its not important if you dont see it right now just try accepting it for now.

the same creature is better the way he is as a 2/1 in the legacy format becuse there his power matters in your goal to bring the opponent to 0 life. also Mogg Fanatic is not realy played in legacy any more so being toughness 1 is a smaller drawback there.

in vintage he would be better if he was 1/2. here the fanatic is played a lot more so toughnes 1 creatures are more vunrable compaired to toughnes 2 creatures. also in vintage his power is irelavant because he is not played because he can attack as well but only for the extra card draw. he could be a 0/3 and be better in vintage.

in casual its hard to say. do you play agressively ? trying to do as much damage in a short time ? yes ? then you want power. do you play defensivly wanting to prolong the game as much as possible? yes ? then toughness might be better for you.
