Yes, you can block a creature with any number of blockers.

but how do they both block separately or together?

The creatures that are blocking deal their damage to the attacker (if you're blocking with two 2/2 creatures, they deal a combined total of 4 damage to the attacker). The attacking player chooses an order for the blockers. They assign damage to the first one until it's been assigned lethal damage, then the rest to the second one (if there's a third blocker and still damage left over, it goes on to that one, and so on).
