Default are creatures spells in magic

is a creature count as a spell? I read someplace that it is, but in that case I am confused why are there 2 separate cards one that says "counter target spell" (counterspell) and then there is one that says "counter target creature" like Essence Scatter?

ok I just read essence scatter again and it actually says "counter target creature spell" which I guess implies a creature is a spell? Would "counter target spell" counter a creature, or do I have to use a card that specifically says "counter target creature spell"

Creatures are spells when they are on the stack and thus subject to being countered by anything that counters a spell in general (ie. Counterspell).
