in order to use planeswalkers ability do I need to tap it?

Nope, you dont tap planeswalker (I dont think its even possible to get them tapped)

a planeswalker could become tapped if it were to be a creature and attacked (like for example Gideon Jura) or if it became the target of a "tap target permanent" ability like from Frost Titan, but yeah generally being tapped has no real effect on the planeswalker
