Would depend on your Spec and Style of play.

With the free recent respec's it is very simple to get the right spec points in the right places.

IF SOLO: Basically with Escorts you need to spec both cannons and beam weapons. Stick with a type and spec your captain with those in mind. Using all Plasma then no need to spec in phasors. This also makes it easier to select Tactical Bridge Equipment with + to those weapon types. For instance if your using all plasma cannon and beam wepaons, then you could use +beam, + Plasma with etc.

On my Tact Escort I used all Plasma beam and cannon weapons and using the 'beta 3 tactical ability' I could rip apart anything of an equal level or up to +3 above me very quickly. Killing fighters in the first pass.

Look at the weapon procs and decide which is for you and suits your play style.

DUO PLAY: 1 could spec beam and another Cannons with the object of the first one in takes out shield then cannons incomming behind for the takedown.
