Platter Oval Silver Medium Hotel Service Heavy
RICHARDS RAZORS; MAKE ME AN OFFER I CAN'T REFUSE!

This is a World War II hotel service heavy silver plate medium oval platter
It was made by the German silver fabricators Gebruder Hepp, noted for making
many of the silver service items for the larger German hotels during the
reign of the German high command. The maker mark is At the bottom of the
inside: GEBR HEPP, and silver content 90. The condition is used, with some
little nicks and dings and light tarnish from everyday routine use. It is in
overall very good serviceable original condition. The platter measures
12 5/8 by 8 5/8 inches by 15/16 inches high. Marked by the inscription
"GEBR.HEPP90", where “90” is probably related to the amount of silver used
    for plating.

Gebruder Hepp was founded in 1863 by brothers Otto & Carl. Carl, a chemist,
was instrumental in the development of the metal alloy "Alpacca" - also
known as "German Silver" - and developed a process to plate the alpacca with
a thick coating of fine silver. Gebr. Hepp were large suppliers to hotels,
restaurants and cruise ships. The factory passed through several hands in
the teens and 20s, finally being destroyed during WWII and not rebuilt until
1952 by then owner Harry Frank. It was sold in 1988 to WMF [Wurttembergische
Metalwarenfabrik], but again destroyed by a fire in 1990. It was once again
rebuilt in Birkenfeld in 2001. They are still in business.
The ?90? is a designation of silver plate quality, usually indicating the
total amount of silver in a specified number of pieces - generally one dozen
each of table spoons and forks (24 total) - would contain 90 grams of pure
    silver.

    HISTORY:
HEPP quality stems not only from the history of the company that invented
hotel silverware, but particularly in today’s context, from modern
manufacturing and stringent quality control as well.

The brothers Otto and Carl Hepp: Up until 1863 tableware in hotels and
restaurants was made solely of genuine silver. Its disadvantage was that it
quickly showed sign of wear as it was too soft. Added to that it was
expensive and very heavy. That gave Carl Hepp the idea of creating products
that looked like silver but provided the advantages of a harder, longer-
lasting and more economic material. He developed a method of coating nickel
silver with fine silver. This was the birth of hotel silverware.

Stormy years of expansion followed. The idea was a success and hotels,
restaurants as well as the ocean-going liners of North German Lloyds were
equipped with the unique HEPP hotel silverware. In the early sixties the
basic material, nickel silver was increasingly abandoned due to new know-how
and further developments. It was replaced by the new material 18/10 stainless
steel, that was more versatile in use.

Their success – then as now – incorporates traditional values such as
reliability and quality as well as their vast innovative energy. By developing
new processes and products and keeping production flexible they always keep
their finger on the pulse of progress. These are factors that inspire the
confidence of leading hotels, shipping lines, airlines and hospitals and
that result in their worldwide success.
