You can use Acetone (Nail Polish remover) to ease the rust and corrosion off the metal parts. Try to avoid getting it on the rubber or outside plastic.

Acetone will dry the rubber and may discolor the plastic.

WD-40 will work wonders as well, use either of these with a Green Scotch Bright pad and just scrub away. The WD-40 is fine for the rubber, it will actually help prevent it from drying up and cracking.
