    Kaspersky,

AVG is very popular in word of mouth area because it is primarily free. However I would need a third hand to count the number of incidents where as someone either caught a Virus or Worm despite AVG or it was detected but AVG was not able to remove it.

As a technician and a happy customer of many years, I recommend ESET's NOD32 or Smart Security. (NOD32 is just the Antivirus Component).

    My opinion is Avast.
    Reasons:
    - Small memory footprint.
    - Has a resident scanning module to scan webpages, file transfers, e-mails, files accessed, and many more.
    - Automatically updates itself (fantastic for people who can't be trusted to update the anti-virus... like... parents?)
    - FREE!I've had good experience with Avast
