How do you create a recovery disk for a dell dimension 2300?

Unfortunately Windows XP does not have a built in option to create a recovery disk.

Dell does have discs for your particular model that you may purchase but these will wipe and write over your current data.

Are you having a particular issue with your PC or are you interested in being prepared?

I was told that I need to have one so I can boot the computer if something bad happens to it

If you have a Copy of Windows XP then you can use it for Emergency Repair Installations and it also Contains the Recovery Console that can be used to repair most start up issues such at "NT Loader" Missing".

That are various Boot CDs about that contain the Windows Pre Installation Environment but this is mostly good for getting to your data in case of a catastrophic crash.

My best advice is contact Dell and order your Discs, these will not only contain Windows but also the device drivers that your system will require.
