Why don't people use a Pocket Watch any more?

Pocket watches used to be in style (long time ago...) but today it seems noone uses them.

I still hold a pocket watch and prefer it over a wristwatch- I think it is pretty stylish. How come not many people today use one?

I guess in today's busy world there's no time to take the pocket watch out of the pocket, open it and look at the time. You lose a few seconds of time doing that compared to just looking at your wrist

Cell phones can do everything, they are going to kill so many electronics. Pocket watches, beepers, MP3 players, and my (least) favorite, game systems

yes, some people I know dont even wear a wristwatch. They just check the time on their cellphone all the time.

Though Pocket watches do make very nice collectibles

I remember seeing a movie the other day taking place in the days where lots of people still wear pocket watches. It did look stylish, I remember the vest and the pocket watch with the gold chain hanging out of it

According to wikipedia, pocket watches gained popularity durind the railroad times since schedule was very important for the railroads. The pocket watches started declining in popularity in World War I where officers would appreciate that a watch on the wrist is a lot more accessible then having to reach into the pocket in the battlefield:

I think in the old times it would generally be worn in the vest pocket

But now not many people wear vests either (another thing that has gond slightly out of fashion) so it is carried in pants pocket and clipped to belt.

Maybe that's another reason people dont carry them anymore, they aren't sure of the proper ways to wear them

I personally prefer pocket watches. They are even more elegant than common watches. It would be great if some brands like Frederique Constant would make pocket watches, again. But I think wrist watches are more handy.
