Intro
Just like the rest of the fourth generation, there are a number of Pokemon who will only evolve if they like you enough. There have been a few changes in these games that could not be addressed properly in any other guide as these two games have some unique content that needs to be mentioned and explored. The basics of Happiness or Friendship remain unchanged. Your Pokemon starts with a particular base amount and only when this is maxed will it evolve into its new form.

Checking on Your Pokemon
In HeartGold and SoulSilver you will need to head to Goldenrod City to check on the happiness of your Pokemon. There is a girl in the house above the Goldenrod Department store who will tell you how your Pokemon feels about you.

The Basics
There are two options that anyone can take advantage of: your team arrangement and your Poke Balls. For the first, you want the Pokemon that you are raising to be in front of your team. This will get them out of their Pokeball which is always a pleasure for them. The second thing is to catch the Pokemon using either the Friend Ball (made by Kurt in Azalea) or the Luxury Ball that can be bought in the Goldenrod Department Store.

Where To Go
In HeartGold and SoulSilver there are two places you can go to get your Pokemon groomed. They will love doing this. The first place you can go is the Goldenrod Tunnel. Inside it rests a pair of Brothers who will offer to groom your Pokemon. The elder one is more expensive but will consistently do a great job. The younger brother is cheaper and will usually do a lesser job than his sibling. There are times though he will do an exceptional job and outshine his sibling. The second place you can go is Pallet Town. You can talk to Daisy, Blue's sister, between 3 – 4 pm any day. While it is only a small window to work with, it is free and won't cost you a thing. There is nothing wrong with hitting both in the same day though.

*For those with a Feebas, aiming to evolve it, trade it over to HeartGold or SoulSilver and put it through this treatment. It will raise its beauty without having to bother with Poffins! This will still raise its sheen, but makes it much easier to raise only beauty.

Items
Anytime you use items on a Pokemon, they will enjoy it. While items like Potions, Ethers and some berries will raise their happiness a little, there are few that are an exception and will boost it more. If you feed them Pomeg, Qualot, Hondew, Kelpsy, Grepa or Tamato berries, you will lower the Effort Values you've gained on it, but you will also make them a lot happier. This is a great way to just speed through the process. The second set of items you can use are the stat boosting items Protein, Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Carbos and HP Up.

Pokewalker
This is another option totally unique to HeartGold and SoulSilver. What this offers above anything else is a reward for being very active or figuring out how to cheat the Pokewalker. Each step taken helps make the Pokemon happier. This means as long as you can keep track of the Pokewalker you can put a Pokemon on there and boost its happiness while not playing Pokemon itself. The Pokewalker registers a walk the best and does not measuring running as easily. Still, keep it on you as much as possible but try to avoid it going through the wash!
