San Diego Comic Con 2013 – What's New In Magic: The Gathering (Part 1)
At this panel Mark Parvis, Brand Director, Jenna Helland, Creative Designer and Dave Gustenin, Magic: The Gathering Experience talked about the upcoming sets: From “The Vault 20”, “Theros”, “Born Of The Gods” and “Journey To Nyx”. “Theros”, the new set, offers a very new element in Magic, or a return something that has not been seen in Magic for a long time.
From The Vault: 20 offers a look across the years of Magic: The Gathering. While it is a total of 20 cards, it is meant to cover the whole of the years. Each of the cards could be found in some of the great decks. There were only a few cards revealed here: “Jace, The Mind Sculpter”, “Hymn To Tourach”, “Akroma's Vengaence”, Gilded Lotus”, and “Impulse”.
Next they talked some about the upcoming Duel Deck: “Heroes Vs. Monsters”. The Hero Deck is a White splashed Red. They revealed a card from each deck. For the Hero Side:it was “The Sun Titan”. It featured a new artwork for it. The second deck, Monsters, is a Green/Red Deck. This will give you some very nasty creatures and good boosts for them. The card revealed for this deck was a new one: “Dolukranos, Wold Eater”. None of the text was shown. All the panel saw was it was CMC of 4, 2 Colorless, 2 Green. It is from Theros and something very new. Just that what was never revealed as there was Power/Toughness and Body Text were absent.
After the Duel Deck they talked about Commander. The Magic development team has been looking forward to releasing a new set of 5 decks for this format. These will be released November 1st. Across the decks a total of 51 new cards. In each of the decks you will find around 15 new cards. There was one new Commander revealed: “Jeleval, Nephalim's Scourge”. This card works very different and was plainly designed to be played as a Commander who does not mind dying as much. This, with the other new Commanders can go a long way to see a shift in what is played within the format. This is definitely something to be looking forward to.
