North along the beach you’ll spot a woman under a parasol.

Battle: Parasol Lady Laura (1280 Poke)
Opponent: Castform Lv 40

Past her and the standing umbrella in the sand is a Big Pearl you should snag, then surf to the right.  The water here contains some pokemon you’ll want to be aware of, specifically Frillish and Staryu, though there continue to be Basculin here.  Frillish and its evolution Jellicent bear the unique typing of Water/Ghost, filling them with an array of resistances and weaknesses (as well as two immunities).  This makes them unfortunately easy to counter by type, though Jellicent’s HP and Special Defense are both large enough to offset that somewhat.  Offensively, Jellicent is a bit on the weak side, with mediocre Special Attack and poor Attack and Speed, but as might be expected of its typing, it functions better through tricks and status moves than any other way.  While it does have access to some fairly strong attacks (Hydro Pump, Water Spout, Ominous Wind) it will rarely use them, working better with Will-O-Wisp, Night Shade, Hex, Scald, Recover, and other such maneuvers.  Staryu evolves into the inimitable Starmie with the use of a Water Stone, and while in its fully evolved form only gains access to Confuse Ray- so best to hold off for the much more useful moves it learns in its base form.  Starmie itself is a Water/Psychic pokemon with a very high Speed stat and a nice solid Special Attack, whose defenses are slightly better than adequate.  Use of Staryu’s moves makes this much more intimidating, as it can naturally learn Cosmic Power to boost both its defenses, as well as Recover to restore its health and both Camoflage and Reflect Type to make its weaknesses harder to target.  If that weren’t enough, its good Special Attack can take advantage of the naturally learned Bubblebeam and Power Gem, as well as a very wide array of TM moves, up to and including such favorites as Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Surf, Grass Knot, Flash Cannon, and Psychic.  Certainly nothing to sneeze at, particularly given that one of Starmie’s usual Abilities is Natural Cure, which automatically relieves it of burns, paralysis, sleep, and freezing the moment it leaves battle.

A shoal rises under the water here to the East, and sitting on it in the shallows is TM29, which contains Psychic.  This powerful move is obviously of the Psychic type, and is not only a 10PP 90-power move, but stands a chance on each hit of lowering the target’s Special Defense and thus granting subsequent uses the ability to deal even more damage.  Psychic is a nice straightforwards attack move that sees frequent use on those pokemon that can learn it.
