Don’t follow Hugh Noth just yet, though- you’ve got more training to do.
Run off to the West on the sand instead of the boardwalk and you will turn up a Heart Scale, and continuing even further West can get you a Pearl from where the beach seems to end. Loop around the water to the South and you’ll soon run across a woman looking for a battle.
Battle: Socialite Marian (7800 Poke)
Opponent: Lopunny Lv 39
Off to the East of Marian is a Big Pearl in an Item Ball, so you don’t need your Dowsing App to locate it.
Up the stairs is Route 14, where you can start off with another battle.
Battle: Gentleman Sheldon (7800 Poke)
Opponent: Delcatty Lv 39
The grass here holds quite an array of opportunities. In addition to the Golduck you are likely to anticipate and the slightly surprising Drifblim, you can also find some new pokemon here. Swablu and Altaria are here, a rare two-stage Dragon-type (while Swablu is Normal/Flying, Altaria is Dragon/Flying) whose powerful defenses let it set up a lot of tricks with boosting and status moves. While Altaria’s attack stats aren’t anything to write home about, Dragon Dance lets it do quite a bit physically, and it has some interesting utility and other options, such as Perish Song, Cotton Guard, Bulldoze, and Wonder Room. Also present is Mienfoo, which evolves at level 50 to Mienshao, a Fighting-type with access to not only the remarkable Regenerator abiltiy, but also high Speed and absolutely massive Attack that plentifully offset its somewhat poor defenses. Mienshao also has a movepool that, while a bit shallow and narrow, includes a staggering array of powerful physical attacks both in and out of the Fighting type. Finally, Absol is also present, a Dark-type with magnificent physical attack and mediocre-to-poor everything else. Absol is actually quite useful, though, as it combines Super Luck, an ability that improves its critical hit rating, with Swords Dance and a large number of attacks that have a high chance of critical hits to begin with. Thus, while a bit frail, Absol is actually equally or more dangerous than Mienfoo, assuming it survives being hit (which Mienfoo doesn’t have to worry as much about with its nice high Speed stat).
