First Impressions: Plants Vs. Zombies on the DS

Plants Vs. Zombies has been a hit for quite a while, enough that it has now seen a port onto two different gaming platforms. It has also shown up on virtually every portable device on the market as well. It is easily Popcap's most popular game. If there was one surprise was that it showed up early on the Nintendo DS, being originally scheduled for release in Feburary.

Plants Vs. Zombies is a simple game, much akin to the Invader games or RTS, to a degree, that we have seen for years on the computer. What makes it so unique is the challenge of fending off waves of Zombies with your plant army. Every Plant has its own role and ability. Some help produce Sun, the currency to fuel the growth of your plants. Other simply attack Zomies, some with effects. One or two are bombs of various sorts and yet others are good for slowing down the invasion, buying you precious time to collect Sun.

The DS release did not see the addition of any new plants or zombies. Instead, it got 4 new mini-games that you can fire up and play with friends. Still, the multi-card multiplayer requirement seems a little steep for a game that is so well known. It would have been nice if it had featured the single card download play option. Still, being able share the experience is great and this feature is only shared by the Xbox 360 (the DS wins if only because it is free to play with friends who bought the game).
If there is one thing that can be said for Plants Vs. Zombies is that is has a lot of variety. When you meet Crazy Dave, just call him Crazy Dave, you will understand with games like Wall-Nut Bowling and a number of other crazy games like it.

This is a fun game to give a try if you have not yet grabbed it on one of the other platforms its offered on. While it is among the more expensive versions, it does offer something for that price tag (especially since you don't need to be at a computer or with an Android or iPhone/iPad). You can expect to find a quirky, charming and very adorable game resting inside the cute cardboard coversleeve.
