The inside of Burgh’s huge cocoon is ankle-deep in colored paints, littered with paint cans, and last of all includes Burgh and a painting he looks to have been working on.  Make sure your team is in shape before facing Burgh (take the secondary hole in the Gym Leader’s cocoon to head back outside and to the Pokemon Center if you need to), because even though his team are bugs, they’re a very solid challenge.  A fire-type like Growlithe will do well against two of his pokemon, as will a flying-type such as Pidove or Zubat.  You’ll want to have ahold of a Psyduck or something with the neccessary moves to hold an advantage over rock for his Dwebble, though, as Smack Down can easily take out a flying or fire pokemon with very little warning.  Try to avoid using Purrloin here, as bugs will ruin dark-types, and the same goes for Servine.  On the off chance you have a poison-type available, that will do well in all situations- poisoning Dwebble makes its faceplant inevitable, and double-weakness on Burgh’s other pokemon will leave them flattened as well.

Struggle Bug isn’t much to look at in an attack unless used in just the right situation- as a Bug-type move with a power of 30, it’s not really that effective in most battles, but the fact that it always lowers the target’s Special Attack means it can quickly neutralize some opponents.  If you can, stick it on something with notoriously weak Special Defense to prevent opponents taking advantage of that weakness.

With Burgh defeated, make sure you’ve done everything you intend to here, then head North.  At the entrance to the North street of Castelia, the scientist with the outrageous hair will accost you again.  He requests a look at your pokemon, and since he won’t do any more than look, there’s no harm in allowing it.

Impressed by the quality and power of your pokemon, he goes off on a short tangent before introducing himself as Colress.  He declares himself a scientist researching how to bring out the power of pokemon, curious of whether it is through a bond with a trainer or some other method that this can be best achieved.  He also requests a battle to test his theory.  Accept or refuse, he heads to Route 4 to wait for you so that you can battle him.
