Following the water’s edge route from the Poke Ball trader will take you outside the Virbank walls, and when you reach the end of the path you can pick up a Silk Scarf- a handy item for any Normal-types or pokemon you have that are leaning heavily on Normal-type attacks.

Once you’ve picked those up, you can head back to the grass outside the Complex and poke around a bit- the pokemon here range from levels 10-12 and include Pidove, Patrat, and the odd chance at that tastiest of XP balls, Audino.  Still, it’s just ‘part of Route 20', so you’ll want to head on South to the complex before long (though not before sampling the Audino goodness).

On entering, you’ll likely spot a couple of paths to either side of the complex’s gate.  While the left one will be interesting later, all it contains right now is a tree you can’t get past thanks to your lack of Cut.  Instead, enter the complex itself, where you’ll immediately find a large bald man.  If you talk to him, he’ll request a favor- the workers here need to get ‘fired up’, apparently bored witless by their jobs.  If/when you agree, he’ll enthuse to you about three particular new workers in the complex and tell you to go get ‘em.

When you head down the complex path, you’ll soon spot some grass to the right and a guy in a ballcap to the left.  The grass contains Growlithe, Magby, Magnemite, Patrat, Pidove, and Koffing (alongside the standby Audino) in levels 10-13, so if you’re interested in a little training and perhaps some new team members, you’ll want to check that area out before stepping into the guy’s line of sight.  Once you do, he challenges you- but he’s not bringing as much to the table as you ought to be by now.

Battle: Youngster Masahiro (208 Poke)
Opponent: Lillipup Lv 13

As you head further South, you’ll see an empty spot in the grass to the right- that contains another Great Ball for your happy collection bag.  Heading further off through the same patch of grass, you can head up North again along the East wall of the complex into an area with dark tall grass, which contains a scientist.  He’ll talk some about oil cracking and the tower he’s standing in front of, then run off....

At any rate, there’s also a blank patch in the grass near there, where you can find a Tinymushroom, which is worth a fistful of Poke.
