On his defeat, Cheren tells you he’s glad you were his first challenger, and awards you the Basic Badge, which will let you command pokemon from trades that are levels 11-20 without any issue.  He also makes a small gift to you of TM 83, which contains the Work Up move.  This move is basically useful for mixed attackers- anyone else is going to consider it a poor substitute for Swords Dance or Nasty Plot, and not really any better than, say, Howl.  It’s more than nothing, though, and you can use it to replace moves that you simply aren’t going to use no matter what.

Either way, after going over Work Up, Cheren explains the Gym Leader system, pointing out that there are eight Gyms, each with its own badge, and seeking all the badges will give you an opportunity to fill up your Pokedex.  He also mentions that he went on just such a journey two years ago himself.

Your work here done, it’s time to head out.  As you exit the Gym, Bianca is waiting outside for you, and calls you over to ask how you did.  She’s suitably impressed when you show her your brand new badge, and tells you that you have potential- she also gives you the TM for Return, a far superior move to Work up.  Return is a potentially very strong attack- the better you treat your pokemon, the stronger Return becomes and, in the end, you basically have to constantly let a pokemon get knocked out and feed it tons of bitter medicine to get it to -not- like you.  As a Normal-type move, Return has some issues with Rock, Ghost, and Steel pokemon, but with a maximum power of 120, it’s certainly nothing to dismiss out of hand.

Bianca starts to tell you something about Cheren, but is interrupted when he appears in the doorway of the Gym.  He greets her, commenting that it’s been two years since he last saw her.  She responds nervously, and he points out that they should exchange Xtransceiver numbers with you so you can talk to one another.  He steps up to you and registers himself with your Xtransceiver, and Bianca then does the same, also giving you a connection to Professor Juniper.

The phone immediately rings, starting a four-way call between the three of you and Professor Juniper.  The Professor introduces herself to you, and tells you that Bianca passed on your acceptance of the Pokedex to her.  She thanks you and explains her hope that your work will help provide information on how to get along better with pokemon.
