Sewaddle is one of the very rare Bug/Grass Pokemon, and while the combination has a lot of potential, its final form of Leavanny leaves a bit to be desired (pardon the pun).  As with the older bugs of the first couple generations, Leavanny is frail and not especially strong offensively.  It learns some self-boosting moves to make up for that a bit, but it rarely is going to get a chance to use them, not being as fast as it really ought to in the first place.  Provided a bit of support to ensure it doesn’t run afoul of its many counters, though, it can still provide a decent Pokemon for your team.  Don’t let its weaknesses stop you if you like the Pokemon- though relatively numerous, they are surmountable.

Sunkern is another Grass-type, though it is pure-Grass.  Nothing particularly special, Sunkern is mainly a defensive Pokemon until you eventually lay your hands on a Sun Stone.  At that point you can evolve it into Sunflora, the (rather obviously) sunflower Pokemon.  Not especially durable and rather slow, Sunflora packs a strong punch with Special Grass attacks, so if you think you can support it, this Pokemon can buy you a surprising number of wins.  Like with Leavanny, though, it really only works well with good support for it- if your team can’t provide it with the support and protection it needs, it’s generally safer not to train one.

When you depart this grass, you can speak to the Hiker here, or you can sneak off to the left- if it’s Autumn, you can cross a patch of leaves to pick up a spare Pokeball, and heading upwards and left puts you on a tiny path through the trees which curves around and ends in a blank spot that secretly holds another potion for your convenience.

Once you’re done, you can go poke the Hiker- but he declares that you’re not to pass because you haven’t got any Gym Badges at all yet and sends you back.  Cross the bridge to the river instead, and follow the wide path up from there, alongside the water.  This brings you to the Floccesy Ranch.  Just inside the gate to the left is a patch of tall grass.  Here you can find Lillipup, Mareep, Azurill, Psyduck, Pidove, Riolu, and Patrat.

Lillipup offers your first truly powerful Normal-type here, eventually becoming the large and wooly Stoutland.  This pokemon is fairly versatile with its strong combination of offensive and defensive stats, particularly given one of its potential abilities, Sand Rush, boosts its speed in a weather condition- one that wears away at opponents and furthers its goal of dealing damage.  Stoutland has both good Attack and Special Attack, making it pretty versatile, and it has the defenses to make its way in most fights not againt Fighting-types as well.
