Intro
This is an interesting sort of game. It actually uses two means of control. It is one of the very few licensed games to utilizes a wonderful attachment to the NES, the Zapper. Too few games in the
Story
You’re the fine young Bayou Billy, and Gordon’s gone and stanched your girl Annebella! The man’s in need of some schoolin’! Okay, that’s my take on it, but it’s done in a style imitating the bayou lingo of the South. Gangsters grabbed your girl because you went and smashed up their warehouse. So, all riled up, Billy’s going in to take care of Gordon.
Gameplay
This is where the game gets a bit interesting. The controller is used for most of the games, and only in Game A do you have the chance of using your treasured Light Gun. The game has three parts to it: Fightin’, Drivin’ and Shootin’
Fightin’: This Double Dragon, just not really all too well balanced in terms of play. The enemies take a good number of smacks to take down and that’s just the standard variety! Punch with B, Kick with A, Jump Kick with Both. Not all that great hit detection honestly.
Drivin’: The car, I swear is LOADED with explosives and lit matches. Just a BUMP and then boom, still, the controls were decent and lobbing grenades to take down planes is a fun idea. A life bar, even a small one, would have helped this part a lot.
Shootin’: A) Zapper: I had to play this one twice. Here was easily the best part of the game. Good moving targets that were active and trying to kill you (and not NEARLY as annoying as that Dog in Duck Hunt). The stage moved and lasted a good little bit. Not long enough to drag and not short enough to make one feel ripped.
B) This made the controller zoom around the screen. While it was easy to aim, sometimes, it was hard to get the target where I wanted it in time. Still, I didn’t die once in the play-through. Quick to grasp and use.
Controls
The controls, where applicable, are fairly easy to get the hang of. I couldn’t seem to get the magnum in-game to work though, even after reading the manual (which I had to find and download), I still couldn’t get it to work. My own poking around couldn’t get the result for some reason. The Fightin’ stages are easy to grasp. Drivin’ just takes a moment to figure out. Shootin’ is the same with the controller, and if one has trouble with the Zapper … just make sure it’s plugged in.
Graphics
It say the least, in the Fightin’ stage they were glitchy. If more than two characters were on the same plane, the sprites would just disappear. The gameplay screenshot is a good example of this actually. They did look pretty good aside from that. Drivin’ was done well and it was decently enjoyable. Shootin’ again seemed to top the others, while it was a whole lot of bodyguard gangsters who were coming at me, they at least showed no signs of vanishing.
Sound Effects & Music
Not too bad, not too great. It’s enough that it won’t annoy you at least. This is useful if for nothing else it makes some parts of the game more bearable.
Obscurity
If I hadn’t been willing to just try a game that looked alright, I won’t have noticed this sucker. Impulse buy, haven’t seen too much on it though. This game is of at least some note in regards to finding it.
