If you cross to the far side of this first level of the stronghold, you can spot not only the ammunition dump towards the front, but also the beholder-beast that is Xhu’daggab. This area has a few more eyes with kidnapped cubs in it, but more significantly it has a number of grunts and some channelers- specialized warlocks working to keep Xhu’daggab bound. You’re going to have to clear out a number of the grunts in order to drop the flares for the bombardment, but you can pretty much ignore the channelers if you like- they won’t attack you at the range you can launch the flare from, if you prefer to avoid that fight.
Heading up another set of stairs brings you to the middle layer of the external ruins. In the middle of this area are several demolishers, a cluster of goblin tanks waiting on the edge of a ledge. These are guarded by not only their engineers but another spread of warlocks and some Death Knight-like melee guardians who have a penchant for temporarily shielding themselves every so often. If you’re lucky or slick, you can drop the flare on the tanks without fighting anything but an engineer or two, but you’ll probably have to deal with a few warlocks to boot. In order to achieve this, you’re going to have to take advantage of the pillars and the overall shape of the temple. If you’re not experienced at ‘mountain-running’ or using seemingly unpassable terrain to travel through, you should probably skip this- otherwise you’ll wind up falling to the lower floor a lot, taking falling damage and landing right in position to suddenly be in a fight. Not the best state to be in. Of course, since the flare gun doesn’t have a firing activation time, if you’re really gutsy and have a lot of speed, you can just run up to them, launch the flare, and then flee- but the warrior-types and Twinspire Deathguards are likely to slow you down enough to do you some serious harm, so this is hardly advisable.
Finally, you can choose to climb to the third tier of the ruins either on the East or West sides. Each side has one of the two commanders you need to kill, and the stairs and top platform are patrolled by more Twinspire Deathguards, as well as a couple of grunts and several more warlocks. None of these should be too dangerous for you- the real threats are Dalgan and Bellandra. It takes a bit of careful work and use of the pillars here as shelter to draw off their warlocks and guards, but doing so will make a huge difference in the resulting combat. Again, pillars can be great friends of yours, keeping you out of line of sight of some enemies while letting you peek around and take potshots at others.
