Rarity Guide managed to sit down with Shelly Wan, one of the illustrators for Magic: The Gathering and talk with her a bit.

An Interview with Shelly Wan at Alternative Press Expo 2010

Shelly Wan

While wandering the halls of APE, by chance, I noticed some familiar symbols on a table. Taking a closer look revealed that they were from Magic: The Gathering. A little poking around at the booth found me looking at numerous cards that I recognized from recent sets and a few from the new Scars Of Mirrodin set. Some that caught my eye were Malakir Bloodwitch, Sanctum Gargolye and a number of others from Shards of Alara, Morningtide and Zendikar.

After a bit of waiting, as Shelly was busy talking with people, we got to sit down and talk for a bit about her entry into the world of Magic.:
"I got my start from sending in my art to the Art Dump contests. I had made a number of submissions and was selected through that. I did have some help from an Art Director Rockstar Games who has also been working with Magic the Gathering for over ten years."

When I asked her about her favorite pieces, there were two answers.
"One is the cover for the first volume of Liquid Cities. My favorite illustration for a magic card was Sage of Fables. They are special to me because I worked so hard on them since they were the first ones."

One expected question I asked was any advice that she had to offer to aspiring artists.
"Participate in forum contest. Listen to your peers, as you are all working toward the same goal. That they could offer helpful feedback. I recommend to aim not to win but to do your best".

When I asked her if she had any projects in the works at present,
"I'm now working for Pixar as an artist."
