Sonic the Hedgehog reviewed for the Sega Genesis. Sequel to the start of a new mascot.

System: Sega Genesis
Title: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Publisher: Sega
Circa: 1992

Intro
The “Way Past Cool” hedgehog is back in action. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 offered many improvements over the original. Dr. Robotnik is back to his old tricks, capturing animals, turning them into robots, looking for the Chaos Emeralds.

Story
Sonic has to race after and stop Dr. Robotnik . This time though, he does not have to do it alone. A two-tailed fox, Miles “Tails” Prower, has come to aid our speedster hero.

Gameplay
Sonic is one of the game series that defines what it is to be a platformer. It does so with high speed action and responsive controls. There are a number of little things that make this game great. Its challenge is nothing bad, requiring little effort to learn each level and master it.

Multiplayer
This version of Sonic incorporated multiplayer in a few ways. The first, and least obvious, is that in the single player game you can connect the second controller and have your friend take control of Tails. For some of the Special Stages, one will find this a great boon.

The second mode of Multiplayer is more obvious. It is the option just below the “1P Start”. This puts you and your friend in a series of races against each other with various items to help you out or to hinder your friend.

Controls
The controls are just about as simple as the original Sonic the Hedgehog. “A”, “B” or “C” can be used to jump. The one new addition of the Spin Dash can be done by holding Down on the D-pad then hitting “A”, “B” or “C” repeatedly.

Graphics
The graphics saw a minor revamp from the original game. A lot of the edges were smoothed out, giving Sonic and company a more realistic appearance. Sonic is now a darker shade of blue.

Sound Effects & Music
The music to this game is pretty good. It is fairly popular for remixing as well (as it has at least one remix album). The sound effects are good, though the jump one might get annoying after enough game play. Then again, it has survived through a number of different games.

Obscurity
While not the most popular title, it still was part of the Sonic series.

Summary/Author’s Take
You would never guess this was the first Genesis game that I owned. More so that it took me a while to beat (given my present skill). It was the first to introduce the Spin Dash into the series, which has since become a staple of the series.
