A series of articles covering Guild Wars 2. This part covers the Sylvari story mission, "Snuffing Out Embers", for the "Where Life Goes So Too Should You" storyline. This brings you face to face with the Knight of Embers to keep Maylck's true origins from reaching the rest of the Nightmare Court.

Guild Wars 2 – Snuffing Out Embers

This is the Fourth Mission of the Sylvari Storyline of “Where Life Goes, So Too Should You”. Having found the Knight of Embers along with the truth of Malyck's birth it is time to go confront her before she can reveal the truth to the Grand Duchess of the Nightmare Court. Now, head over to the Nemeton grove, to the South of the Renown Heart for Leigheara where you will find the entrance to the final instance in this storyline.

Head over to the Malyck and Caithe/Trahearne and talk with them. A cutscene will run:
Caithe/Trahearne: “This is the place. The Knight of Embers will be waiting for the grand duchess. If she is allowed to tell Faolain the truth, the results will be disastrous.”

Malyck: “Why, Caithe/Trahearne? What aren't you telling us? This is my life! I deserve to know the truth!

Caithe: “Yours isn't the only life in danger. Listen to me very carefully, and I'll explain. For years, I have suspected that the Pale Tree is not a unique creature. Legends tell that the seed from which she spring was one of many in a cave. That cave that has never been found, but it seems that at least one of those other seeds was planted. From it grew the tree which bore you, Malyck.”
Trahearne: “You're right, but yours isn't the only life in danger. I'll tell you the truth, and then, you must make a choice. My research has led me to believe the Pale Tree is not a unique creature. Legend says her seed is one of many, found in a cave. That cave has never been found, but it seems at least one of those other seeds was planted. It sprouted the tree which bore you, Malyck
Hero: “If that's true, there could be other cities of Sylvari. Other groves ...”

Caithe: “Yes. Groves untutored by Ventari's tablet. Who knows what they would be like. What those sylvari dream?”
Trahearne: “Groves untutored by Ventari's Tablet. Do those Sylvari dream, I wonder? What inspires them?”

Hero: “If Faolain finds out, she won't need the Grove. The court would burn the Pale Tree to the ground and find another one that can more easily twist to nightmare.”

Caithe: “If that happens, the sylvari race will be lost forever. Zhaitan and the Elder Dragons will win.”
Trahearne: “Yes. If that happens, the sylvari race will be no more. Tyria will fall into darkness.”

Malyck: “No! I won't let that happen. If I must die to keep this secret, I will do so.”

Caithe: “Better that the Knight of Embers die, instead. Come, we have no time to waste.”
Trahearne: “Then we have only one option. The Knight of Embers must die.”

After all that, talk with Malyck to learn what his plan is. He reveals that he kept the Nightmare Court Disguises from Joy's End. Now you can respond with one of the 3 personality aspects. They all lead to the same point of why he is not going in disguise, just the manner of its presentation changes. He sees properly that the Nightmare Court would expect all of them to be disguised but not just one or two of the trio. Don the disguise and start over to the West.

There are plenty of the Nightmare Court in the surrounding area. That means there is little to worry about for now. Just continue to the Northwest toward the Wall of Thorns that you see there. Once you approach one of them will explode something at your feet, knocking you down. Here, you can choose one of the 3 personality choices and get admitted to Beldame's Rise behind the Wall. Once through head to the West and then follow the slope up to the East.

Outside the camp
Courtiers: 8 (17 - 19
Hounds: 5

Inside the camp:
Courtier: 10 (Lvl. 19)

once you get to the top you get a cutscene then you fight 2 of the Nightmare Courtiers that were nearby. Be sure to free the 2 Skritt that are inside the cage nearby. They are a big help to anyone trying to complete this mission. Now head down the slope and over to the right. Take out the trio of Courtiers inside the tree hollow. Now turn to the East and head over to the next prison cell. It is lightly guarded with only a Courtier and a Nightmare Hound. Done right, you will not pull the remaining 3 courtiers from the nearby hollow. Open up the cage to free more Skritt that will side with you.

Now it is time to press on toward the South. Wait a minute or two as the rest of the group wipes out what is left of the Nightmare Court. This will draw out the Knight of Embers. She felt she deserved more than an ambush. Still, she tells Malyck that he is already a creature of the Nightmare and he should simply admit it and join them already.

She will eventually just surround the area with a wall of fire, creating an arena for the battle. She will then begin to assault your party. She is not an easy fight so keep an eye ion your health. Just pound away as best possible for your class. When she is down by a third of her health she will call in her squires: Lania and Soira. Thankfully you will only be fighting them one at a time.

Lania the Feathered Death is the first to attack. She is a ranger who packs a mean punch with her bow. She will do her best simply to inflict damage but not too many status effects. Fight carefully and it will not be too long before you are facing the Knight of Embers again.

In this round she will still have any previously inflicted damage. Just attack her as is best for you. Her greatsword is something to fear as it does a lot of damage quickly and viciously. Be thankful for its lower attack speed and the aid you receive from Malyck and Caithe. When she gets to two thirds health she will call out her second squire, Soira the Dreameater.

Soira is a necromancer who will call up a pair of Bone Fiends that will continually attack you and the rest of the party. Just focus on her to make the battle a lot simpler. This will ensure that everyone will go down quickly.

The final part of the battle is taking on the Knight of Embers for a third and final time. Just keep going at her as you have before. She is very angry now. Apparently she was getting close to this one.

When the fight is over Trahearne/Caithe will appear carrying news from the Pale Tree:
Trahearne: “Ah, there you all are. The pale tree said I would find you here. I've discovered something you must know. The tree, Malyck's tree, it's not –”

Caithe: “We know. The Nightmare Court nearly found out as well, but we have silenced the Knight of Embers.”

Malyck: “Still, this is only the beginning. Even if they don't know the reason, the court will keep searching for their 'harbinger.' If I stay here, others will try to convert me to Nightmare. They'll discover my secret.”

Caithe: “He's right. Faolain will hunt him, and I promise you: she does not give up.”

Malyck: “Somewhere to the west, at the source of that river, there's another tree. Maybe even another city, with more sylvari like me. My family. I'm going to find them. When I do, I'll tell them about the Grove, and I'll return with an army to help fight the dragons.”

Hero: “I wish I could go with you, Malyck, but my duty is here. I wish you good fortune and safe travels.”

Malyck: “Don't worry. We'll meet again, some day.”

If you sided with Trahearne to seek out the Seer the final dialogue changes thus:
Caithe: “There you are! The Pale Tree told me where to find you. I have to tell you, Malyck's tree ...”

Trahearne: “We know. The Nightmare Court nearly found out as well. It is for the best that the Knight of Embers is dead.”

That will finish out the “Where life goes, so too, should you” storyline for the Sylvari. Choose your reward and leave the instance.
